On undated examples the tower may appear oriented to the left or right. The overall design is characteristic of late medieval Swiss cantonal coinage executed in the hammered technique. |

Surrounding the inner circle is the devotional legend + SANCTVS: NICOLAVS, invoking Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Fribourg, in capital Roman letters within the outer beaded border.
