| Opis awersu | Scyphate gold histamenon struck in hammered technique. Christ Pantokrator stands facing in the centre of the concave field, nimbed and wearing imperial loros, his right hand raised in benediction and his left hand holding the Gospels. To his left stands Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes in full imperial regalia, and to his right stands Empress Eudokia, both depicted in three-quarter length effigies flanking the central figure. The legend + PWMAN EVΔOKIA appears in Greek characters distributed across the field, with the Christogram IC-XC divided on either side of the central figure. The entire composition is enclosed within a double beaded border typical of late Byzantine nomisma coinage. |
