Æ Hemilitron

Tauromenion — modern Taormina — was refounded as a Greek city in 358 BC after Dionysius I of Syracuse had previously expelled its Sicilian population and installed a garrison. The civic coinage that followed, including this hemilitron, reflects the city's determined reassertion of Greek identity under conditions still shaped by Syracusan regional dominance. The bronze fractional series to which this piece belongs circulated locally during a period when Tauromenion was navigating the competing pressures of Timoleon's pan-Sicilian campaigns and the later rise of Agathokles.
