Kyzikos was among the earliest and most prolific issuers of electrum coinage in the Greek world, and its fractional pieces circulated far beyond the Propontis region — recovered in hoards from Egypt to the Black Sea littoral. The city's natural access to electrum, likely sourced from river deposits in the broader Lydian sphere, gave it a sustained minting advantage that most rival poleis could not replicate.
At roughly one gram, this hemihekte represents one-twelfth of the Kyzkene stater. The denomination was practical for small transactions in a commercial port where Kyzikos functioned as a major transit hub for Black Sea trade.
