Frederick III of Blankenheim held the see of Utrecht from 1393 to 1423, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the chapter canons and neighboring secular lords over episcopal revenues and territorial rights. Gold gulden production under his authority drew directly on the Rhenish gulden standard that had been codified by the Kurverein of 1386, binding Utrecht's coinage to the weight and fineness conventions of the great Rhineland electors — a monetary alignment that served the diocese's commercial ties to Cologne and the lower Rhine trade networks.
