David of Burgundy, illegitimate son of Philip the Good, was appointed Bishop of Utrecht in 1455 through direct Burgundian political pressure — the chapter had little real choice. His forty-year tenure coincided with the full absorption of the northern Low Countries into the Burgundian orbit, and his gold coinage reflects that dependency, adhering closely to the Rhine gulden weight standard that the Burgundian dukes had been enforcing across their territories to facilitate regional trade and tax collection.
The forty-year emission window makes precise dating of individual specimens essentially impossible without die study.
