Gulden - Arnold of Egmont

Arnold of Egmont's tenure as Duke of Guelders was among the most chaotic of any fifteenth-century Low Countries ruler — he was deposed by his own son Adolf in 1465, imprisoned for several years, and only restored through the intervention of Charles the Bold of Burgundy in 1471. The gulden spans that entire turbulent arc, issued across a reign interrupted by captivity.

Guelders maintained its gold coinage partly as a political assertion against Burgundian monetary pressure, which was systematically absorbing neighboring duchies into a unified currency zone. That resistance was ultimately short-lived; Arnold's death in 1473 left Adolf to navigate the duchy's absorption into Burgundian orbit.
