Elisabeth of Görlitz held Luxembourg not through conquest or inheritance in the conventional sense, but through a prolonged political mortgage. Her uncle, Emperor Sigismund, had pawned the duchy to her in 1441 as security against an unpaid debt — an arrangement that left her nominal ruler while actual control was contested by Philip the Good of Burgundy, who ultimately forced her out in 1443.
