Elisabeth of Görlitz held Luxembourg not through conquest or inheritance in the conventional sense, but through a prolonged political mortgage. Her uncle, Emperor Sigismund, had pawned the duchy to her in 1441 as security against an unpaid debt — an arrangement that left her nominal ruler while actual control was contested by Philip the Good of Burgundy, who ultimately forced her out in 1443. This gros was struck inside that disputed window, issued by a regent whose authority was perpetually provisional.
