Eppillus was among the first British rulers to adopt Roman titulature, styling himself REX on his coinage — a deliberate political signal in the decades immediately following Caesar's expeditions and Augustus's sustained diplomatic pressure on southern British kingdoms. Whether this represented genuine submission to Roman influence or a savvy appropriation of prestige is still debated. His quarter staters circulated across the Atrebatic heartland centered on Calleva Atrebatum, the site now beneath modern Silchester, where excavation has confirmed dense Iron Age and early Roman-period occupation layers.
