Obverse description Central field bears the large Asomtavruli monogram Ⴃ (D), the initial of King Demetrius (Demetre), within which is nested the letter Ⴄ (E), forming a combined royal cypher. The monogram is rendered in bold relief and occupies the majority of the flan, set within a plain inner border. The design is characteristic of the Georgian Bagrationi royal coinage tradition, employing the ancient ecclesiastical Asomtavruli script as a mark of dynastic and religious authority.
