Additional information

Demetrius II ruled Georgia during a period of crushing Mongol suzerainty under the Ilkhanate, and his coinage reflects that dependency — Georgian kings of this period were effectively Ilkhanid vassals, required to campaign in Mongol armies and issue currency within parameters the occupiers tolerated. Demetrius ultimately refused a direct Ilkhanid order and was executed in 1289, later canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church as "the Self-Sacrificer."

The copper fals denomination served everyday petty exchange in a monetary system where silver had been systematically drained by Mongol tribute demands.
