Portugal's royal finances were under acute strain throughout this period, with the Crown simultaneously funding court expenditure and bracing for Napoleonic pressure on the Iberian Peninsula. By November 1807, that pressure had become invasion, and the entire Braganza court fled to Brazil — abruptly ending domestic minting operations in Lisbon. Escudos struck in the final months of this issue may have left the Casa da Moeda with the presses still warm as French troops entered the city.
