Beschrijving voorzijde Bare head of Tiberius facing left, rendered in a naturalistic portrait style typical of Julio-Claudian provincial coinage. The emperor's features are firmly modelled, with a strong jawline and short-cropped hair depicted in fine parallel strands. The effigy is set within a beaded border, with the encircling legend distributed around the portrait in the field. No diadem or laurel wreath is present, emphasising the restrained, classicising aesthetic favoured by Tiberius.

Aanvullende informatie

Struck at Carthage under the authority of the proconsul P. Cornelius Dolabella, this coin belongs to a narrow window of Roman colonial coinage in Africa Proconsularis during the early Tiberian period. Dolabella held the post in AD 23-24, the same year he suppressed the rebellion of Tacfarinas — a Musulamian chieftain who had harassed the province for seven years. The Senate voted Dolabella triumphal ornaments for the victory, though Tiberius pointedly denied him a triumph proper, jealous of military glory on behalf of his generals.
