The emperor's features are firmly modelled, with a strong jawline and short-cropped hair depicted in fine parallel strands. The effigy is set within a beaded border, with the encircling legend distributed around the portrait in the field. No diadem or laurel wreath is present, emphasising the restrained, classicising aesthetic favoured by Tiberius. |

Struck at Carthage under the authority of the proconsul P. Cornelius Dolabella, this coin belongs to a narrow window of Roman colonial coinage in Africa Proconsularis during the early Tiberian period. Dolabella held the post in AD 23-24, the same year he suppressed the rebellion of Tacfarinas — a Musulamian chieftain who had harassed the province for seven years. The Senate voted Dolabella triumphal ornaments for the victory, though Tiberius pointedly denied him a triumph proper, jealous of military glory on behalf of his generals.
