| Opis rewersu | Standing group composition depicting Emperor Hadrian at right, togate or in military dress, extending his right hand in a gesture of greeting or address (adlocutio) and holding a scroll in his left hand; facing him stands the personification of Mauretania at left, sometimes distinguished by an elephant-scalp headdress, holding a patera in her right hand and a vexillum (military standard) in her left. Between the two figures stands an altar, typically with a bull at its base, symbolising the sacrificial rite accompanying the imperial adventus ceremony. The large senatorial SC monogram appears in the field, affirming this issue as an aes coinage authorised by the Senate. The scene commemorates Hadrian's visit to the province of Mauretania, part of his extensive series of provincial adventus reverses. |
