Between the two figures stands an altar, typically with a bull at its base, symbolising the sacrificial rite accompanying the imperial adventus ceremony. The large senatorial SC monogram appears in the field, affirming this issue as an aes coinage authorised by the Senate. The scene commemorates Hadrian's visit to the province of Mauretania, part of his extensive series of provincial adventus reverses. |
