The arms of the cross pattée are boldly rendered and fill the lobed compartments of the inner frame in the tradition of Genoese gold ducats of the medieval period. The peripheral legend, in uncial Latin characters, invokes the name and title of Conrad, King of the Romans, a nominal reference retained by convention on Genoese coinage long after its historical relevance had lapsed.
