Obverse description Central device depicts the city gate of Genoa surmounted by an open compass, the whole enclosed within a polylobe frame whose interior points are adorned with trefoils, itself surrounded by a beaded border. The gate motif, a long-standing civic emblem of Genoa, is rendered in the angular, stylised manner typical of late medieval Italian hammered coinage. The surrounding legend, inscribed in uncial Latin characters, identifies the issuing doge and his regnal number. The overall composition is contained within a plain circular flan of irregular outline characteristic of hand-struck gold coinage of the period.
