| Obverse description | Head of Herakles facing right, depicted as a youthful, heroic effigy wearing the Nemean lion's skin headdress, the scalp drawn tightly over the crown with the lion's jaws framing the brow. The hair falls in thick, naturalistic locks behind the ear and along the neck. Struck at Abydos during the wars of the Diadochi — the bitter succession conflicts that followed Alexander's death in 323 BC — this issue belongs to a period when several mints continued producing coins in Alexander's name long after he was gone, a practice that served the practical need for a trusted, universally accepted currency across the former empire. Abydos, controlling the Hellespont crossing, held genuine strategic value; whoever held the mint held a chokepoint.
Price 1539 places this squarely in the post-Alexander civic or Diadochi-era production, though attributing these issues to a specific political authority remains contested among specialists.
