Ariarathes I was not a king in the conventional sense when this coin was struck — he governed Cappadocia as a satrap under Achaemenid authority, and the transition implied by his coinage reflects the chaos following Alexander's eastern campaigns rather than any formal grant of sovereignty. When Perdiccas moved against him in 322 BC, Ariarathes was captured, crucified, and his territory absorbed into the wars of the Diadochi. This issue therefore predates that end by a matter of months at most.
