Additional information

Charleville was a deliberate provocation. Charles I de Gonzague founded the town in 1606 specifically to compete with the nearby Spanish-held town of Mézières, and his principality's right to strike coinage was exercised with similar defiance — producing French-denomination copper in a pocket territory that technically operated outside French royal monetary authority. The Double Tournois types he issued across his long reign are catalogued through numerous sequential varieties, and CGKL#606 represents one of the later distinctions in that sequence, differentiated by die subtleties that took Colaert, Genevès, Kupiec, and Lagarde considerable effort to untangle.
