Qaidu ruled the Chagatai Khanate in open defiance of Kublai Khan, refusing to attend the kurultai that legitimized Kublai's claim and spending decades waging war against the Yuan dynasty across Central Asia. Bukhara, one of the great mint cities of the Islamic world, continued striking silver under his authority throughout this period — a practical assertion of political independence expressed through coin production rather than formal declaration.
At roughly half the weight of earlier Mongol dirhams, this issue reflects the broader debasement pressures that plagued post-Toluid silver coinage across the region.
