Reverse description The reverse field is filled with four lines of Arabic inscription in the bold, compressed calligraphic style characteristic of Alaouite hammered dirhams. The legend identifies the ruler as Muhammad ibn Abdallah, Commander of the Faithful, followed by the mint name Fes (Fez) and the Hijri date 1183 (corresponding to 1769-1770 CE). The Arabic Eastern numerals for the date are clearly rendered in the lower portion of the field and are visible in the image. The flan is irregular in shape with a plain, unworked edge, typical of hand-struck Moroccan silver coinage of this period.
