Tochtamysh seized control of the Golden Horde in 1380 after years of fragmentation under competing khans, unifying both the eastern and western wings of the khanate for the first time in a generation. His Azaq mint — at the Don estuary trading hub known to Europeans as Tana — was among the first he activated to assert that reunification in metal. The timing of these issues, running through 1385, places them squarely before his catastrophic conflict with Timur, which would eventually dismantle everything he had consolidated.
