A stylized lily (fleur-de-lis) motif appears in the central field between the two lines of inscription, serving as a decorative divider. The strike is characteristic of Norman-Sicilian hammered coinage, with the legend and ornament somewhat weakly impressed on the irregular bronze flan. The combination of Arabic script with a Western heraldic device reflects the multicultural artistic tradition of the Norman court of Palermo. |

A Kufic Arabic legend surrounds or flanks the star, partially encircling the central device in the manner typical of Norman-Sicilian bronze issues of William I. The strike is uneven, consistent with the variable alignment and irregular planchet characteristic of twelfth-century hammered Sicilian coinage. The design reflects the distinctive bilingual and multicultural numismatic tradition of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. |
