Obverse description Two lines of Kufic Arabic legend occupy the field, arranged horizontally across the flan. A stylized lily (fleur-de-lis) motif appears in the central field between the two lines of inscription, serving as a decorative divider. The strike is characteristic of Norman-Sicilian hammered coinage, with the legend and ornament somewhat weakly impressed on the irregular bronze flan. The combination of Arabic script with a Western heraldic device reflects the multicultural artistic tradition of the Norman court of Palermo.
