| Obverse script | Arabic (Kufic) |
| Obverse lettering | (Translation: Struck by order of the guide according to the command of God, King William, in the city of Mahdia in the year 549. Praise be to God, it is fitting to praise Him and, He is deserving and worthy [of praise]. King William) |
| Reverse description | Entirely epigraphic design in Kufic Arabic script, arranged in concentric circular registers mirroring the obverse layout. The innermost circle contains a two-line Arabic inscription within a dotted border, surrounded by an annular band of legend separated by plain fillets. The broad outer marginal band carries a further Arabic inscription encircling the entire coin. The die work follows the Fatimid dinar tradition closely, with the royal and religious titles of William I rendered in an elegant Kufic hand; a suspension hole is pierced at the bottom of the flan. |
