| Obverse description | Three-quarter facing head of Aphrodite, turned slightly to the right, wearing a sphendone hair-net and a pendant earring visible below. The goddess's features are rendered in the fine fourth-century Karian style, with softly modeled cheeks and delicately incised coiffure. A ship's prow appears behind the neck, serving as a secondary device alluding to Knidos's maritime significance. The Greek ethnic legend ΚΝΙΔΙΩΝ runs along the periphery of the flan. The flan itself is broad and irregular, characteristic of hand-hammered Chian-Rhodian standard silver coinage. |
