Denier - Raymond V or Raymond VI / Raymond VII

The counts of Toulouse held the marquisate of Provence as a secondary title, and these deniers circulated across a region that became the front line of the Albigensian Crusade after 1209. Raymond VI was excommunicated, his lands invaded, and the county subjected to decades of military and ecclesiastical pressure from the north. That the coinage continued through three successive Raymonds without meaningful design change reflects deliberate political conservatism — monetary continuity was one of the few assertions of legitimacy still available to rulers whose authority was being systematically dismantled by the crown of France and the papacy simultaneously.
