Otto III inherited the imperial throne at age three following his father's sudden death in 983, leaving the empire governed first by his mother Theophanu and then his grandmother Adelaide. The Dortmund mint was among the western mints producing deniers during this regency period, meaning coins struck in his name for much of this issue were authorized by women ruling in all but title.
Kluge's classification places this among the Carolingian-tradition deniers that Otto III's administration inherited rather than designed — a monetary conservatism that persisted well into his personal rule after 994.
