Louis IV "the Child" was the last Carolingian king of East Francia, crowned at age six in 900 and dead of illness at seventeen. His reign over Lotharingia was effectively administered by Archbishop Hatto of Mainz and a fractious nobility — the coinage issued in his name reflects institutional momentum more than royal authority. The Namur mint, situated on the Meuse, was strategically positioned along major trade routes connecting the Frankish heartland with the Low Countries.
Prou's classification of this type among the Carolingian deniers places it within a late series showing progressive debasement from the reform standards of Charlemagne's 794 capitulary.
