The outer legend MONETA BRVXSELLE identifies the Brussels mint, rendered in large, somewhat irregular Latin capitals arranged around the periphery. The design follows the standard early medieval Carolingian denier format, with emphasis on the mint name as the primary reverse device. The flan edges are ragged and the die axis variable, consistent with hand-struck production of the period. |
