The Teutonic Order's Prussian branch minted bracteates as a practical concession to local monetary custom — the thin single-sided format was already entrenched in northern German markets before the Knights consolidated territorial control in the 13th century. Adopting it smoothed trade friction without requiring the Order to mint heavier bilateral coinage it couldn't yet support at volume.
Waschinski's classification remains the standard reference for Order bracteate typology, though Kop. and Wielandt diverge on precise attribution for several subtypes within this grouping.
