Beschrijving voorzijde Frontal bust of the Virgin Mary, crowned and facing, depicted in a hieratic Byzantine-influenced style with long wavy hair falling to the shoulders and a distinctive jewelled crown surmounted by a cross finial. The effigy is rendered in low relief with schematic facial features typical of 13th-century episcopal coinage. A beaded or toothed inner circle frames the bust, with the circular Latin legend distributed around the periphery. The overall composition reflects the Romanesque devotional iconography prevalent in Auvergne ecclesiastical minting.

Aanvullende informatie

The bishops of Clermont held comital rights over the city and its surrounding territory, a temporal authority confirmed and contested across the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in a running dispute with the counts of Auvergne. The anonymous bust type — deliberately stripped of identifying legend — was a common episcopal strategy to assert monetary prerogative without inviting direct challenge to a specific bishop's right to strike.

Billon deniers of this region circulate poorly in the numismatic record, surviving mostly in hoards from the Massif Central.
