| Obverse description | Frontal bust of the Virgin Mary, crowned and facing, depicted in a hieratic Byzantine-influenced style with long wavy hair falling to the shoulders and a distinctive jewelled crown surmounted by a cross finial. The effigy is rendered in low relief with schematic facial features typical of 13th-century episcopal coinage. A beaded or toothed inner circle frames the bust, with the circular Latin legend distributed around the periphery. The overall composition reflects the Romanesque devotional iconography prevalent in Auvergne ecclesiastical minting. |

The bishops of Clermont held comital rights over the city and its surrounding territory, a temporal authority confirmed and contested across the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in a running dispute with the counts of Auvergne. The anonymous bust type — deliberately stripped of identifying legend — was a common episcopal strategy to assert monetary prerogative without inviting direct challenge to a specific bishop's right to strike.
Billon deniers of this region circulate poorly in the numismatic record, surviving mostly in hoards from the Massif Central.
