| 表面の説明 | Central field features the crowned Arms of Zeeland — a composite shield displaying the heraldic devices of the County of Zeeland — surmounted by an imperial crown, with the date 1584 divided to either side of the shield. A large floreate cross with ornamental terminals occupies the lower portion of the device, characteristic of the Burgundian cross type. The circumferential Latin legend reads MONETA NOVA ARG. COM. ZELAN., identifying this as new silver coinage of the County of Zeeland, separated by pellet stops. The overall design is executed in the late-Renaissance hammered style typical of Dutch Republican provincial coinage of the period. |

This half daalder belongs to the turbulent opening decade of the Dutch Revolt, struck in Middelburg just as Zeeland was consolidating its position within the nascent Union of Utrecht. The Burgundian cross type was a deliberate political choice — the rebellious provinces adopting Habsburg dynastic imagery while simultaneously fighting Habsburg rule, projecting legitimacy through the very iconography of their enemy.
Middelburg's mint was among the most active in the southern delta during the 1580s, its output driven partly by the urgent need to pay troops and naval crews operating in Zeeland's waterways.
