Obverse description Central field dominated by the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield quartered with five escutcheons charged with bezants in saltire (quinas), set within a bordure of castles, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown rendered in high relief. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate scrollwork typical of the Manueline style. The entire device is encircled by a beaded inner border. A circumferential Latin legend in Gothic lettering runs between the beaded border and the coin's irregular hammered rim, reading the royal title of Manuel I.
