(Translation: Manuel I, King of Portugal)
Reverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal coat of arms, comprising the traditional shield of Portugal with the five escutcheons arranged in a cross pattern, each charged with five bezants. The shield is surmounted by a crown, rendered in a simplified, stylised form characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the early sixteenth century. The overall design is bold and compact, filling the flan, with no surrounding legend. The surface shows characteristic green copper patination and uneven striking typical of this denomination.
