Obverse description Crab depicted facing, rendered in high relief with outstretched claws and splayed legs filling the field. The carapace is prominently raised and finely detailed, conveying a naturalistic style typical of Sicilian and island bronze coinage of the Hellenistic period. The design is enclosed within a border of raised dots (beaded border) running along the coin's periphery.

Additional information

Lopadusa — modern Lampedusa — was a tiny island station in the Sicilian channel, and its autonomous bronze coinage is among the most obscure civic issues in the western Mediterranean. The island's numismatic output was limited almost certainly to local exchange needs for passing maritime traffic rather than any sustained urban economy. CNS#3 corresponds to one of only a handful of recognized types attributed to this mint.
