The shield is of the pointed Gothic type characteristic of mid-15th-century French feudal coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, interrupted by a mullet stop, reads + LVDOVICUS *DALPh[ ]VS*VIE, identifying Louis as Dauphin of Viennois.
