The obverse legend encircling the imperial effigy reads ΑΥ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟϹ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟϹ, identifying the emperor by his full imperial titulature. The portrait exhibits the refined engraving style typical of high-quality Pergamene civic coinage of the Antonine period, with carefully rendered drapery folds over the military cuirass. In the foreground, the two local river-gods Ketios and Seleinous are depicted reclining and facing one another, each leaning upon an overturned water-urn from which water flows, symbolising the rivers of the Pergamene territory. The reverse legend ΚΗΤΙΟϹ ϹΕΛΕΙΝΟΥϹ ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ Β ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ proudly proclaims Pergamum's distinguished status as twice neokoros, a prestigious title denoting the city's role as twice-appointed guardian of the imperial cult. The scene reflects the sophisticated civic iconography for which Pergamene bronze coinage of the Antonine era is renowned. |
