He extends his right hand downward, pouring wine from a cantharus over a panther crouching at his feet to the left, an iconographic pairing emblematic of the god's cult at Teos. In his left hand he holds a long thyrsus, the ivy-tipped staff of Dionysiac ritual. The reverse legend, distributed around the field, identifies the issuing magistrate and the civic community. The composition is consistent with the well-established Dionysiac type struck at Teos throughout the Imperial period. |

Teos, a small Ionian coastal city best known in antiquity as the birthplace of the poet Anacreon, continued striking civic bronze under Gallienus during his sole reign after Valerian I was captured by Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260 — an unprecedented humiliation that left the western and eastern reaches of the empire fragmenting into breakaway states. That Teos was still producing locally authorized coinage through this period reflects the degree to which provincial civic minting operated independently of central imperial crisis.
