Chalcis in Euboea retained the right to strike bronze coinage under Nero through the authority of a local magistrate — the ΕΠΙΜΕΛΗΤΗΣ — whose abbreviated name appears in the inscription. This administrative title was essentially an overseer appointed to manage civic finances, and his naming on the coin reflects a Greek civic tradition of magistrate accountability that Rome permitted to continue in Achaea well into the imperial period. The specific magistrate abbreviated here as ΚΛΕ(Ν(Ι(ΚΟΥ) remains only partially resolved in the literature.
