| Obverse description | Confronted busts of the imperial couple: the draped bust of Empress Messalina faces right toward the laureate head of Emperor Claudius, which faces left. The two effigies are rendered facing one another in the characteristic provincial confronted-portrait convention. The Greek legend ΤΙ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙ ϹΕΒΑϹ (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus) is partially visible around the field. The flan is irregular and the surfaces carry a dark green patina consistent with prolonged burial. |

| Reverse description | A togate male figure, identified tentatively as Claudius, stands facing in the field, holding ears of grain (corn) in his extended hand, a reference to imperial beneficence and the fertility of the province. The encircling Greek legend ΚΑΙΣΑΡΕΩΝ ΒΡΕΤΑΝΝΙΚΟΣ (of the Caesareans, the Britannicus) surrounds the central type, commemorating Claudius's conquest of Britain in AD 43. The die work is typical of the Trallian civic mint under the Julio-Claudians, with a flat, broad flan and bold if somewhat worn relief. |
