Barbarian imitations of Constantinian bronzes circulated widely across the Rhine and Danube frontiers during the fourth and early fifth centuries, produced by Germanic groups who lacked formal minting infrastructure but not the demand for small exchange media. The legends on these pieces were copied by die-cutters with no Latin literacy, degrading through successive generations of imitation into meaningless scratches — what catalogers call "sketched" or "blundered" legends.
