David VI Narin ("the Little") ruled a fragmented Georgia under Mongol suzerainty following the catastrophic invasions of the 1220s and 1230s. By 1245, the kingdom had been effectively partitioned, with David operating as a Mongol client while his co-ruler David V controlled the eastern territories. The Dmanisi mint, active in what is now southern Georgia, continued producing copper coinage through this turbulent administrative split. The double Qoronikon dating — appearing on both faces — is the defining diagnostic of Type 2 within this issue, a peculiarity that distinguishes it from the single-dated Type 1 struck at the same facility.
