99 Heller Oberalm

Oberalm is a small Salzburg village — in 1920, it had no business issuing currency at all, and yet here it did, like hundreds of Austrian municipalities scrambling to plug the change shortage left by the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The Kleingeldersatz emergency, as it was known, produced an almost absurd proliferation of local Notgeld, and 99 Heller was a denomination that appears just often enough across Austrian municipal issues to suggest it was a deliberate attempt to avoid rounding up to a full Krone.

The designer credit to Zickert is uncommon — most village-level Austrian Notgeld went unsigned or bore only a printer's imprint.
