Beschrijving voorzijde The Portuguese royal coat of arms, comprising a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) and surrounded by a bordure of castles, occupies the central field. The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The date 1809 is arranged vertically to the left of the shield, while three rosette ornaments appear to the right. The circular legend reading JOANNES D: G: PORT: E BRAS: P: REGENS surrounds the entire design, identifying João as Prince Regent of Portugal and Brazil.

Beschrijving keerzijde The central field is dominated by a large armillary sphere mounted on a stepped pedestal, its meridian ring, equatorial band, and latitude circles rendered in fine relief, with an oblique ecliptic band crossing the globe diagonally. Two symmetrically placed arrows or lightning bolts flank the sphere at left and right. The circular legend SUBQ. SIGN. NATA STAB. (an abbreviated Latin motto meaning 'born and stabilised under this sign') runs around the periphery, referencing the emblematic importance of the armillary sphere as a symbol of the Portuguese Crown and Brazil.
