| Obverse description | The Portuguese royal coat of arms, comprising a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) and surrounded by a bordure of castles, occupies the central field. The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The date 1809 is arranged vertically to the left of the shield, while three rosette ornaments appear to the right. The circular legend reading JOANNES D: G: PORT: E BRAS: P: REGENS surrounds the entire design, identifying João as Prince Regent of Portugal and Brazil. |
